Margin vs markup calculator

Know what you keep from every sale. Understand the difference between margin and markup.

01 / YOUR INPUTS
Product, payment fees, shipping and other per-sale costs.

Use the same month for your goal and costs. Changing period relabels; it does not convert inputs. Use consistent tax-exclusive amounts. Currency changes formatting, not exchange rates. Inputs reset when you leave or reload this page.

02 / YOUR PLANLive calculation

Gross margin

60%

for your month

Markup150%
Gross profit / sale$30.00

Margin divides gross profit by selling price. Markup divides it by cost. Negative results mean you sell below cost. Fixed costs are excluded.

No sign-up. No financial inputs sent to a server.
UNDERSTAND YOUR NUMBERS

The formula, without the mystery.

Margin = (price − cost) / price; markup = (price − cost) / cost

A worked example

A product costing 20 and selling for 50 has 30 gross profit, a 60% gross margin and 150% markup. A 50% markup does not mean a 50% margin.

What if the cost is zero?

Markup has a zero denominator and is undefined. This tool asks for a positive cost so both measures remain meaningful.

Keep the assumptions consistent

Use one planning period and one currency. Enter amounts consistently excluding sales tax or VAT. These simplified models do not account for uncertainty, inventory limits, working capital or progressive taxes. Results are planning estimates.
